What is Musculoskeletal Therapy?

Musculoskeletal therapy is also known as Myotherapy. It is a form of manual therapy that focuses on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain. Associated conditions usually the result of inflammation due to direct trauma, postural, bio mechanical deficits or overuse.  The therapist uses various assessment protocols to form a differential diagnosis. To address the pain and discomfort this therapy also uses numerous soft tissue techniques such as trigger point therapy, myofascial cupping, dry needling, joint and nerve mobilisation, muscle energy technique, rigid and kinesio taping, exercise prescription and bio mechanical correction.

Why see an MST?

Nothing works in isolation, so the neuro-musculoskeletal system as a whole is what produces movement of the body. Muscles, joints and nerves are highly interdependent upon each other, therefore it stands to reason that if there is an imbalance in one area, there will more than likely be deficits in others. The aim of your MST is to identify your condition through a comprehensive assessment. The treatment will ascertain a probable cause, initially eliminate pain/stiffness. Additionally, it will address any alignment or postural issues as well as abnormal movement patterns as a result of joint, muscle or nerve dysfunction.  Whilst massage on its own is helpful in relieving pain, it seldom resolves the problem completely.

What to expect

The initial consultation aims at identifying the condition and reducing pain. You may require a number of follow-up sessions (dependant upon the problem) to address any bio mechanical dysfunction related to the issue or injury. We may recommend a monthly maintenance plan to keep you functioning optimally.
